SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol for transmitting data on the Internet in encrypted form. This is to ensure that data cannot be read by third parties. Depending on the TLS versions, different algorithms are used for encryption. The browser marks a secure connection, usually with a lock next to the address bar.
